Martin Young, a new arrival on the local music scene, is a finger-picking songwriter guitarist who first played at the Barleycorn Music Club as a member in the early 1980’s.

He honed his songwriting and playing skills in the church for 15 years before very recently deciding to present his original compositions to a wider audience. (He said turning 60 made him ask what he might regret not doing most in twenty years time, and doing ‘this’ was the answer.)

More recently he played at the Barleycorn Music Club in 2021, the Four Winds Music Club later that year and then on invitation to their Manneville Festival in 2022.

His lyrics have been used for a viral production honouring healthcare workers at the outset of the Covid19 pandemic (Healthcare Heroes) and in PJ Powers’ latest release (What would a hero do?) – both on YouTube.

His inspirations come from his days in the military, as a Knysna town councillor for a tumultuous two years, current SA and world developments, and from his full time career in medicine as a GP and then as an ENT surgeon.

Bill Knight: Song-Poet, Story-Teller, Singer, Weaver of Tall Tales & Short Truths, Musical Activist. He strongly endorses the Tradition of the Troubadour and Musical Journeyman, as Social Commentator and the Ethical Conscience of Society.
He Writes in English and the Afrikaans Vernacular of the Western Cape and is Dedicated to the Nurturing of an Authentic South African Sound.
He is a Purveyor of Dreams, Fireside Ballads and Torch-songs; truly, a “Smous of Songs”. This is Wes-Kaap Music at its Best!

Rayelle Goodman is one of the finest violinists in the Country. Well respected in the Classical and Jazz communities, she is much in demand among prominent Singer-Songwriters, with a well-deserved reputation for her versatility, improvisation and an uncanny ability to instinctively gauge the mood and character of the Song in question.

It will be an unforgettable treat to experience these fine musicians collaborating in the intimate setting of the Cottage Club.
