Bright Blue first appeared on the scene in 1983, with their infectious punky, jive grooves, and heartfelt lyrics about dodging the army, trying their best to escape and smoking weed on 2nd Avenue. The first album, “Bright Blue”, released in 1984, brought “Window on the World”, “Who is the Enemy” and the fans favourite, “2nd Avenue”, to a wider audience, and in search of fame and fortune, the band moved to Joburg soon after.

Playing gigs with eVoid, Ella Mental and the mighty Juluka, Bright Blue, the guysfrom the small town, grew into a Big City rock band, gigging regularly at Jameson’s bar in Commissioner Street and the Chelsea in Hilbrow. This was the heart of the Joburg scene…. and the band were digging into a deeper rock,

mbaqanga groove.

“Weeping” … recorded one night in a small Joburg studio and first played on national radio by Neil Johnson, was a no. 1 hit on radio 5, and is etched in South African music history as a timeless anthem, covered by many great local and international artists.

The Bright Blue version is still played regularly on SA radio stations and sung by choirs from the Soweto Gospel choir to the Stellenbosch university choir, whose most recent version sung at 30 000 feet, went viral on YouTube.

The band recorded a second album, “The Rising Tide”, in 1988 and toured the country playing bigger venues…. the fans came, sang and danced and wanted more. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world” anticipated the dawn of democracy in South Africa, and Bright Blue was there to sing in the changes and welcome Madiba andthe returning exiles at a rally in 1990, to  celebrate the dawn of the Rainbow Nation

Dan Heymann went to live in New York, Tom Fox relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, while Robin Levetan, Ian and Peter Cohen are still here in Cape Town.

But the spirit of the band is strong, and every now and then, there is a new song, a compilation album, and the “never-ending reunion gig”. The most recent one was at the Johnny Clegg tribute concert and then Camel Rock , Scarborough !

The band write songs together, and remain close with visits and online collaboration, and of course another gig …. “because we are still a band… and like we said, we never left !
